Wondering about poor leadership can certainly be objectionable as a topic. But, it’s a great area for anyone to work on and improve in order to observe more success as a team. Taking time to develop well in these areas and advance past these characteristics serves everyone. For anyone to improve, let’s first discuss what are the signs of a bad leader.
What Are The Signs Of A Bad Leader?
Whether as a new leader or a leader that hasn’t had much experience working with a team or group before, there are a number of things that can be focused on to come out ahead. Being a good team leader isn’t always easy. But, with some pointers and some effort, a leader or manager showing some signs of poor leadership can turn that around and build a great team that enjoys working together!
Characteristics Of A Bad Leader
There are a number of areas to work on if a leader isn’t getting great results from your team.
- Disorganized. Do you work on random projects and give out haphazard tasks? Get more organized and prioritize what needs to be at the top of the list. Explain what is expected, communicate that with the team well, and help the team members achieve those goals!
- Bad Communication. Is the group wondering what the leader is thinking? Or what is going on in the office with the door closed all the time? A good leader should make an effort to talk with the team. Have sessions to exchange what is going on with the department and how efforts can be accomplished. Discuss plans and ideas. And, don’t stop at work discussions. A group will be together for many months and years, get to know your team, and enjoy their company. This will help build strong relationships, develop ideas and encourage long-term commitments.
- Only Work. Life is meant to be lived. Some people don’t think work is the only thing to enjoy in life. If a leader decides to work 24/7 that does not mean the team members need to as well. A leader should try not to give them the impression they need to do everything they do. At the same time, encourage the group to meet their goals.
- Undependable. A team will look to their leader as trustworthy, constant, and loyal. The team will depend on them. Make sure to be there for them, whether it’s through coaching and giving them guidance or going to bat for them when they deserve a raise or advancement.
- Micromanaging. Bringing in people that work well on their own and are autonomous goes a long way when you are looking for a team member that doesn’t need to be controlled and constantly looked after. If a leader finds they like to know every detail and give excessive attention during their workday, the leader will probably lose team members and find people try to avoid them when they are in the office. Find great members from the beginning, guide them but don’t hold on too tight. Trust they will do a good job.
- Reluctance. Know your job as a leader and how to make things happen so you can make decisions for the group and individual team members as necessary. Stand by it and be a strong leader for the group. They will admire the solid decision-making. Minds can certainly be changed on matters, but as a leader, make firm decisions for the department and its members.
Signs Of Weak Leadership
Do any of these sound familiar? Being a great leader isn’t always easy. If a leader is having trouble in any of these areas it is beneficial that they acknowledge the issue and work to fix it. Team members or other trusted staff members can even look over the list to help acknowledge any points in question and be an impartial agent.
If a leader is having trouble keeping staff or finding great people to work within their team, start by evaluating the working situation and the way they should be working and engaging. It’s a great insight to understand no one is perfect and yet changes can be made. A leader looking to get ahead could even communicate that to the team, other managers in the office, or a coach skilled in helping leaders become better.
